चित्त= मन, बुद्धि और अहंकार के समन्वय को कहते हैं। इसी को अंतःकरण भी कहते हैं। वैदिक मंत्रों में भी चित्त की असीम शक्तियों का वर्णन किया गया है। वैदिक मंत्रों में चित्त बलशाली और आत्म विश्वासी बनाने की कामना की गई।
हमारा चित्त त्रिगुणात्मक अर्थात सत्व( प्रकाशशील), रज( क्रियाशील)और तमोगुण(जड़ता) स्वभाव वाला होने से त्रिगुणात्मक है। चित्त को जैसा भी वातावरण मिलता है चित्त भी वैसा ही हो जाता है।
1.क्षिप्त= चित्त की क्षिप्त अवस्था में रजोगुण प्रधान होता है। इस अवस्था में मन अत्यंत अस्थिर और चँचल होता है। चित्त किसी एक विषय पर स्थिर नहीं हो पाता, चित्त इधर से उधर भटकता रहता है। इस अवस्था में योग संभव नहीं है।
2. मूढ= चित्त की मूढ अवस्था में तमोगुण की प्रधानता रहती है। तमोगुण के कारण मन अत्यंत आलस्य में रहता है। तमोगुणी भोजन करना व आलस्य के कारण देर तक सोए रहना। हमेशा नींद में रहना। क्या करना है क्या नहीं करना समझ में नहीं आता। इस अवस्था में भी योग संभव नहीं है।
3. विक्षिप्त= विक्षिप्त अवस्था में सत्व गुण प्रभावशाली होता है। बीच-बीच में तमोगुण- रजोगुण घटते- बढ़ते रहते हैं, जैसे साधक ध्यान में बैठा 2 मिनट ध्यान लगा फिर ध्यान भटक गया। मन थोड़ी देर शांत है फ़िर कोई स्मृति याद आई मन फिर भटक गया। जब मन की शांति स्थिति बिगड़ती है उसी का नाम विक्षिप्त अवस्था है। इस अवस्था में योग का आरंभ होता है।
4. एकाग्र= चित्त की एकाग्र अवस्था में समाधि होती है। इस अवस्था में सत्व गुण प्रधान होता है। एकाग्र अवस्था में वस्तु के सत्य स्वरूप का बोध हो जाता है। इस अवस्था में पंच क्लेश अविद्या, अस्मिता, राग, द्वेष , अभिनिवेश क्षीण हो जाते हैं। जन्म- जन्मांतर के कर्म के बंधन ढीले पड़ जाते हैं। वह एकाग्र अवस्था संप्रज्ञात योग नाम से जानी जाती है।
5.= निरोध अवस्था= चित्त की निरोध अवस्था में चित्त त्रिगुणात्मक अवस्था से मुक्त हो जाता है। अर्थात चित्त सत्व गुण से भी मुक्त हो जाता है। चित्त की इसी अवस्था को असंप्रज्ञात योग भी कहा जाता है।

चित्त की पांच भूमियां अथवा अवस्था !
चित्त की पांच भूमियों से अलग चित्त त्रिगुण स्वभाव का है अर्थात् जब चित्त में सत्वगुण प्रधान होता है तो प्रकाशील, रजोगुण प्रधान होने से क्रियाशील और तमोगुण प्रधान होने से जड़ता अर्थात् मुर्खता, अज्ञानता, आलस्य, काम, क्रोध से युक्त होता है!
1. क्षिप्त= चित्त की क्षिप्त अवस्था में चित्त की दशा अत्यंत चंचल होती है! इस दशा में तम अर्थात् आलस्य, अंधकार प्रधान होता है, रजोगुण और सत्वगुण गौण होते हैं! इस अवस्था में चित्त किसी एक विषय पर नहीं ठहरता बार बार बदलता रहता है जैसे बंदर के हाथ में कुछ खाने को दो फिर उसी समय दुसरी वस्तु खाने को दो तो बंदर पहले वाली वस्तु को फेंक देता है और वह लगातार ऐसा करता ही जाता है क्योंकि उसका चित्त चंचल है और एक वस्तु या विषय पर टिक नहीं रहा, दुसरा विषय सामने आते ही पहले वाले विषय को अधुरा छोड़ देता है! चित्त की यह अवस्था काम, क्रोध, लोभ और मोह के सानिध्य से होती है!
2. मूढ= चित्त की मूढ़ अवस्था अर्थात् निद्रा, आलस्य, मन-शरीर में भारीपन! इस अवस्था में रजोगुण प्रधान व तम और सत्वगुण गौण रहते हैं! चित्त की मूढावस्था राग-द्वेष के कारण होती है, जिसमें मनुष्य का झुकाव ज्ञान- अज्ञान, धर्म-अधर्म, वैराग्य-अवैराग्य, ऐश्वर्य-अनैश्वर्य में होती है! यह सामान्य मनुष्य के चिन्ह है! जब सत्वगुण अधिक होता है तो मनुष्य की प्रवृत्ति धर्म की ओर झुकी रहती है और तामसिक वृत्ति मनुष्य को अधर्म -अज्ञान की ओर धकेलती है!
3. विक्षिप्त= चित्त की विक्षिप्त अवस्था में सत्वगुण प्रभावशाली रहता है तथा तम और रज दबे रहते हैं! इस अवस्था में चित्त कभी स्थिर हो जाता है कभी अस्थिर चंचल! इस अवस्था में साधक का ध्यान ईश्वर में कुछ समय के लिए लग जाता है, परंतु बाह्य या आंतरिक कारणों से चित्त की एकाग्रता भंग हो जाती है! इसी को विक्षिप्ता अवस्था कहते हैं! जैसे शांत वातावरण में दीपक की लौ एकटक उपर की ओर दीप्ति मान होती रहती है, परंतु बाह्य वातावरण से वायु के झोंके से टेढ़ी- मेरी या बुझ जाती है! ऐसे ही चित्त की विक्षिप्त दशा को समझना चाहिए!
4. एकाग्रावस्था= जब साधक यम -नियम (अष्टांग योग) के नियमों का दृढ़ता से पालन करता है, विवेक वैराग्य को प्राप्त करता है तो चित्त की उस अवस्था को एकाग्रावस्था कहते हैं! इस अवस्था में सत्वगुण प्रधान होता है तथा तम और रज नाममात्र होते हैं! चित्त की एकाग्र दशा में समाधि होती है! वह वस्तु जैसी है उसको वैसे ही प्रदर्शित कर देती है! इस अवस्था में अविद्या आदि पंच क्लैश (अविद्या, अस्मिता, राग, द्वैष, अभिनिवेश) क्षीण हो जाते हैं! कर्म के बंधन ढीले हो जाते है और निरोध रुप चित्त अन्तिम भूमि की और अग्रसर होता है! यह एकाग्र समाधि समप्रज्ञात समाधि होती है और यह चार प्रकार की होती है 1. वितर्कानुगत 2. विचारानुसार 3. आनन्दानुगत 4. अस्मितानुगत!
5. निरोध अवस्था= चित्त की निरोध अवस्था में चित्त सत्व, रज और तम से भी मुक्त हो जाता है! इस अवस्था में चित्त की सभी वृत्तियों का निरोध हो जाता है! इस अवस्था में मोक्ष की प्राप्ति होती है! यह निर्बीज नाम की समाधि होती है अर्थात् आवागमन के चक्र से मुक्ति, जन्म जन्मातरों के कर्म और वासनाएं दग्ध हो जाती है! यह अवस्था असम्प्रज्ञात योग से जानी जाती है!
